Dr Maphoto is a mentally gifted, intimately connected and exceptionally well-educated clinical scientist and health care professional, issues and programme manager, health entrepreneur and mentor, Dr Maphoto’s leadership abilities are grounded in dedication to her discipline and the broader societal benefit integral to the team efforts she encourages with colleagues and stakeholders locally and abroad to deliver timely results for some of the world’s most pressing health issues.

Enthusiastic and self-motivated with extensive experience in clinical/HIV Medicine/ infectious diseases/ pathology practice, training, learning, development, research and management. She has Diploma in HIV Management, Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Health Economics, and Advanced Health and Financial Management.

She is part of the visionary duo that has established black-owned and black managed diagnostic laboratory. Dr Maphoto’s varied involvement in the hospital and diagnostic pathology sectors cover Specialised Clinical patient management, Specialised Clinical query resolution, Design and execution of Infection Prevention and Control, applied SOP writing and implementation (Treatment and Diagnostic), Quality Assurance / Programme Management of Medical Laboratories and SANAS preparation of accreditation of Medical Laboratories amongst others. She worked with HIV paediatric clinic (SMU/DGMAH), Folateng Wellness Clinic (as part of registrar training), established support to Bronkhorspruit HIV Clinic and other local clinics in the north of Pretoria post-qualification. Dr Maphoto has worked as Expanded Programme on Immunisation National Specialist, responsible for technical advise and scientific direction of the progression and that also meant working closely with ministerial advisory committee for vaccinations. Dr Maphoto has been appointed from 2020-2024 by previous Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize as a National Chairperson of National Polio Expert Committee to advise on Polio Eradication Initiatives in the country.

Dr Maphoto was an active Co-Supervisor of Registrars/Scientist students and Coordinator of their Training Programme prior venturing into private sector, she is a well-versed training and development curriculum designer and implementer who has co-created learning manuals and objective-setting for Medical / Dental undergraduate and postgraduate Honours / Master’s in students microbiology / Virology. She was instrumental in development of High Certificate of Vaccinology, which is offered by Sefako Makgatho Health Science University as online course from the year 2020.

Through her founding years in Virology, Dr Maphoto has co-executed research projects and presented at conferences and congresses. She is trained in the international (GCP& GCLP) ethical, scientific and practical standard to which all world-renowned clinical research is conducted. Currently a sub-investigator in a number of COVID-19 related vaccines and TB studies.

In possession of all the essential administrative skills and advanced technical proficiencies in software, database and healthcare-specific applications, Dr Maphoto is also knowledgeable with service development processes such as Performance Management Frameworks.

Her intimate acquaintance with the data and techniques needed to diagnose and treat viral diseases (including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures) can be acquired to achieve judicious outcomes.
